Her work has been presented in exhibitions and galleries. Alongside her artistic practice, she has extensive experience as an art educator, teaching drawing and painting to children, young people, and adults through courses, workshops, and private lessons.
Under the artist name Hanne Gie, she runs an independent artistic practice combining art, education, commissioned work, and creative projects.

Hanne Giertsen’s work moves between the figurative and the abstract. Taking the human body as a point of departure, she explores how proximity, distance, and human connection can be communicated through fragments, gestures, and physical details.
Hands, faces, and fragments of the body appear as recurring motifs, yet rarely function as traditional portraits. Figures are brought forward, fragmented, or partially obscured, allowing the viewer to encounter something recognisable without being presented with a complete narrative.
In her recent work, charcoal and graphite have taken on a central role. Detailed and precise elements meet raw surfaces, erasure, darkness, and visible traces of the artistic process. This contrast between control and dissolution creates a tension within the works, where realistic forms gradually shift into something less defined.
Rather than offering a single interpretation, Giertsen’s work invites reflection on human connection and the subtle gestures that can hold intimacy, vulnerability, and distance. It is within the tension between what is revealed and what remains concealed that the works find their expression.
The works are primarily created using charcoal, graphite, oil, and acrylic. These materials are used both independently and in combination, depending on the subject, expression, and artistic process.
Drawing holds a central place in the artistic practice, with a particular focus on charcoal and graphite. These materials allow for an exploration of the contrast between precise detail and raw, more abstract surfaces, often creating strong transitions between light and darkness.
Paintings are primarily created in oil and acrylic, often built through multiple layers to develop depth, colour, and texture. Across all materials, contrast, figurative elements, and visible traces of the artistic process remain central.
The human body is central to Giertsen’s work, particularly hands, faces, and fragments of the body. Subjects are examined at close range, allowing details, gestures, light, and body language to become important elements of the final expression.
The works are primarily based on her own photography. The photograph serves as a visual starting point before the subject is further developed through drawing or painting. Compositions may be altered, details emphasised, and certain areas simplified or abstracted.
Detailed observation is an important part of the process, particularly in the relationship between realistic elements and more open or undefined areas. Through this transformation, the photograph becomes the starting point for an independent artwork rather than an image to be reproduced directly.
2013–2014
